Young authors recognized

Budding authors took the Demopolis High stage Tuesday night for the fifth annual Young Authors Symposium.

The event is sponsored by Demopolis City Schools to recognize academic achievement and encourage an appreciation of the written word.

Young authors wait on stage to be interviewed.

Two students each from grades K-12 sat down with interviewers to answer questions about themselves and their writing. The authors and the audience then went into the DHS gym to stand beside displays of their work and answer questions.

Kindergarten student Leland Bice was the first to be interviewed.

DCS Supt. Kyle Kallhoff spoke with students from Westside and U.S. Jones elementary schools, and Demopolis City Schools Foundation director Amanda Barnes questioned authors from Demopolis Middle and DHS.

Supt. Kyle Kallhoff speaks with fifth grade student Paige Williams.

The students’ work ranged from fiction and non-fiction to poetry. They told of their interest in such diverse subjects as science fiction, history and books that challenged the way they believed.

While most of the students do not plan to become authors as adults, they expressed an enjoyment of reading and having others enjoy reading what they wrote.
