West Alabama notches shutout to win first World Series game

8-8-2019 — Demopolis, Ala. — West Alabama’s Parker Phillips lines a single in the first inning against Wahpeton during the Babe Ruth World Series in Demopolis.

Behind the pitching of Mack Bradley and Whit Jockisch, West Alabama won their first game of the 2019 Babe Ruth 14 Year Old World Series by notching a shutout of Wahpeton, ND. West Alabama scored the only run it needed in the top of the first inning, then added four in the fourth and two more in the sixth for a 7-0 win.

In the top of the first, Parker Phillips singled to bring Kevin McElroy around to score from second base. The RBI gave West Alabama the only run it would need on the night and would give Parker what would be the game winning RBI.

8-8-2019 — Demopolis, Ala. — West Alabama’s Mack Bradley fires a pitch to the plate in the first inning against Wahpeton during the Babe Ruth World Series in Demopolis.

West Alabama hit a scoring drought until the fourth inning. By putting together a few hits and by virtue of three passed balls, West Alabama plated four more runs to stretch their lead to 5-0.

The host team would put another two runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning to reach their final tally of seven runs. Wahpeton threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh, but left two runners on base, giving West Alabama the 7-0 win.

8-8-2019 — Demopolis, Ala. — West Alabama’s Whit Jockisch fires a pitch to the plate against Wahpeton during the Babe Ruth World Series in Demopolis.

Bradley delivered four scoreless innings and tallied nine strikeouts. Jockisch notched the save by tossing three scoreless innings. The duo combined for fourteen strikeouts over the seven inning game.

McElroy, Ryan Bumgarner, Phillips, John Powell and Bradley collected one hit each for West Alabama. McElroy, Myles Knott, Bumgarner, Jesse Marshall, Montgomery Freeman, Powell and Jockisch scored one run each. The team collected a total of 12 walks on the night and left 10 on base. The offensive highlight of the night was Bumgarner’s two-run, inside the park homerun in the sixth inning.

West Alabama will play Broomall-Newtown on Friday at 6:45pm.
