West Alabama 13U Babe Ruth overcomes mid-game slump in sixth for 11-1 win over Phenix City

The West Alabama 13U Babe Ruth baseball team faced off with Phenix City for the second time in as many days. Phenix City got back into contention by defeating Bay Minnette 12-9 earlier in the day. However, West Alabama had another impressive outing, offensively and defensively, to take the 11-1 win.

6-26-2021 — Demopolis, Ala. — West Alabama’s Jackson Hasty fires a pitch to the plate during the top of the first inning against Phenix City, in Day 2 action of the 2021 Babe Ruth 13U State Tournament at the Demopolis SportsPlex.

West Alabama jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with Phenix City scoring their lone run in the top of the second. West Alabama’s energy seemed to fade, but they eventually found a spark to get the run back in the bottom of the fifth inning. After the Phenix City top of the sixth yielded no runs, West Alabama came back out fully charged and put another five runs on the board to end the game in the bottom of the inning, resulting in the 11-1 victory.

West Alabama totaled eight hits and collected eight walks on the day. Bryce McElroy led the offensive charge, collecting two hits in three at-bats. Braden Murray, Josiah Colgrove, Tucker Capps, Braxton Vice, Jake Bumgarner and Corbin Knott had one hit each for West Alabama. J.W. McAlpine, Capps and Knott walked twice each. Vice and Bumgarner walked once each.

Jackson Hasty got the win on the mound, completing four innings of work. Hasty collected three strikeouts and issued two walks, while giving up only one run. McAlpine worked two full innings in relief collecting three strikeouts with no walks and no runs. Hasty gave up three hits and McAlpine gave up one.
