WCC Demopolis ready for fall classes

With a full complement of courses on its schedule, Wallace Community College Demopolis is ready to open its doors Aug. 17.

Wallace Community College Dempolis campus director, Blaine Hathcock, left, is shown with WCC president Dr. James Mitchell.

Now it is looking for students to see the advantage of attending classes in Demopolis rather than traveling to the main campus in Selma.

WCC Demopolis is “trying to reach outside the footprint of Demopolis,” said campus director Blaine Hathcock. “Our calling is for surrounding counties and surrounding communities. We want them here.”

Fall semester class registration for both new and returning students will be from Aug. 6-14, said Hathcock. Students can choose to register online or receive help on site from an admissions person on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Following the latest directive from Gov. Kay Ivey, students and teachers will be required to wear masks or other face coverings when school begins.

The Demopolis campus is offering a full load to students who will be able to transfer their credits to another college or university in Alabama, Hathcock said. Scheduled are two math courses, Introduction to Information Systems; Music Appreciation, English Composition I, Western Civilization and Principles of Biology, which includes a lab.

All but one of the courses will be in the evening. After the first week, each class will meet every other week.

Fees for each three-hour course are $456. Books are available online or may be ordered or purchased at the WCC bookstore at the main campus in Selma. Most of the instructors at the Demopolis campus are from Marengo County, he continued.

Hathcock said a list of non-credit courses that can lead to certificates will be announced within the week. These courses are designed to benefit employees at work, advance their careers or even open them to new careers.

As the campus grows, he continued, it will be applying for SACS accreditation. That will enable the Demopolis facility to award two-year associate degrees.

Receiving accreditation “expands all the things you can offer,” he said.

Architectural plans have been completed for converting the former National Guard Armory into the career tech center for WCC Demopolis. Plans now are to have the center ready for students in the fall of 2021.

“That’s going to be the lifeblood of what we do,” said Hathcock. “Career tech will be a terrific asset to this area. There are so many good things that can come from it.”

Registration for WCC Demopolis can be made on the WCC website, wccs.edu, or by following the Facebook page at Wallace Community College Demopolis. For more information, contact Danielle Edwards, Admissions Secretary, 334-876-9402.
