The Demopolis High varsity baseball team worked its way to a 23-8 record in 2013, a mark that stands as the best win-loss record in the county. But what is most impressive about that record is the way the Tigers achieved it.

DHS head coach Ben Ramer and his staff proved adept at placing players in just the right spot to maximize their respective abilities. The team returned only three starters to their 2012 positions and brought a patchwork pitching staff that frequently saw hurlers work one inning per contest.

But the formula proved successful as the Tiger players showed themselves consistently willing to do what was asked of them by their coaches and the team just kept winning.

Ramer will point to his assistant coaches and his players to identify reasons his team was successful this season. But, in the end, successes and failures all point to the head coach and Ramer had an awful lot more successes than failures this season.

Perhaps the best game manager in this part of the state and a man of unquestionable character, Demopolis High School’s Ben Ramer is the 2013 West Alabama Watchman Baseball Coach of the Year.
