Walker asks for raise, schedule change at BOE meeting

Demopolis City Schools bus driver Major Walker started off the Board of Education meeting Monday by asking board members to consider two requests. Presenting comparison salaries from other school systems, he asked the board to raise his $12-an-hour salary.

He then asked that the flex clause in his contract be removed. Walker is paid for 40 hours a week. His regular schedule has him driving 35 hours, but he often drives for field trips, extra-curricular activities and to sports events.

Board chairman Olen Kerby said his requests would be studied.

The board voted for member Bobby Armstead to be the delegate to the December meeting of the Alabama Association of School Boards in Birmingham. It also approved a trip to Dauphin Island Nov. 1-2 for the Demopolis High Biology Department and the use of the DHS gym on Oct. 12 by the Black Belt Dream Center.

The board approved hiring David Vann as the DHS Industrial Maintenance teacher, Angela Wyatt as a Demopolis Middle lunchroom worker and Robin Maroney as Intervention Teacher at U.S. Jones Elementary. Substitutes approved are Burnia Crispin, Keisha Cox and Darren Williams.

The board concluded its meeting to tour the DMS campus. Members already had toured Westside Elementary, DHS and USJ to see first-hand any needs at the campuses.

The next scheduled meeting is Oct. 17 at 5:15 p.m.
