Voters pass tax for hospital

Voters in Marengo County turned out in surprising numbers on a cold, rainy day to pass a 4 mill property tax to benefit Whitfield Regional Hospital.

The unofficial tally as of 8:30 p.m. was 2,679 voting for the tax and 1,777 against, or 60.12 percent to 39.88 percent.

The county was divided on the issue, with the majority of voters in the southern part of the county against the tax and those in the north, especially Demopolis, supporting the issue.
