UWA women’s golf opens schedule at World Golf Invitational

rp_primary_Golf_14-01-31_350ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The West Alabama women’s golf team opens the spring season in the second annual World Golf Invitational at the Slammer & Squire Course on Sunday.

The first year program will look to build on the momentum of two top five finishes in the fall, including a first place finish at The Buccaneer tournament the last time out.

“We ended on a high note last semester and we hope it carries over to this weekend,” said UWA head golf coach Adam Buie. “We’re excited to get back out there. This will be one of the strongest fields we’ll face this season.”

The field includes host school No. 11 Flagler College, as well as top-ranked defending National Champions Lynn University. No. 6 Saint Leo and No. 21 UNC-Pembroke will also be in attendance.

Tori Smith and Christine Stryken will lead the Tiger group, made up of all freshmen, in the one and two spots. Savannah Payne, Jessica Smyth and Heather Gillenwaters will complete the team from UWA.

“This will be a great experience for these girls,” Buie said. “They will have a chance to tour the World Golf Hall of Fame and build team chemistry as well as compete on a premiere course.”
