UWA volleyball preparing for start of season this weekend

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –The start of the regular season is just days away for the West Alabama Volleyball program, and the team as well as Head coach Alexis Meeks are preparing for the challenge that lies ahead.

“I’m feeling really confident. We had scrimmages last Saturday where we played three different teams at Wallace State, competed really well and won every set that we played in,” said Alexis Meeks. “We saw a lot of good things. We actually didn’t see ‘bad things,’ but things we could improve on which is a goal we’ve been trying to get to.”

The Tigers begin the regular season Aug. 25 in Pruitt Hall against Tuskegee with the match scheduled to start at 1 p.m. here in Livingston. Also, during the day UWA will host Mississippi University for Women and Birmingham Southern University for exhibition matches as all of those squads prepare for the season that lies ahead.

“We have one match and a couple of scrimmages to kind of start figuring things out before we go into our first preseason (before conference play) tournament on Labor Day weekend,” said Meeks. “So, it was exciting to see them play.”

The first tournament mentioned by Coach Meeks will be hosted by Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky Aug. 30 through Sept. 1. Following that trip, West Alabama will head to South Carolina for a tournament hosted by USC-Aiken.

The Tigers return home open Gulf South Conference play Sept. 11 against Mississippi College.

Picked to finish fourth by the conference coaches, UWA and its two senior members Alex Fuelling and Jamie Lancellot, look to achieve higher than their given expectations.

“I’m very appreciative of the opportunity I’ve had to play here the last few years and I’m very excited for this season and to play with these girls one more time,” said Feulling. “The GSC has no idea what’s coming for them. They’ll be shocked and we’re ready show everybody what we’ve been working for this whole time.”

“It’s definitely bittersweet, but this group of girls is definitely amazing,” said Lancellot. “I can’t wait to see how far we go.”
