UWA plans Summer Transportation Institute for high school students

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama’s Center for Business & Entrepreneurial Services is now accepting applications for the 2016 Summer Transportation Institute in anticipation of funding. The on-campus residential camp will serve rising freshman through senior high school students and is tentatively set for June 21-July 1. The application deadline is Friday, March 18. This marks the sixth year for UWA to host an STI program.

Approximately 18 students from grades 9-12 will be accepted to participate in the no cost two-week summer program. Scholarships will in the following:

  •  All STI Program Costs/Room Fees
  • Workshops/Handouts
  • STI Room and Board
  • Facility Usage
  • Equipment/Supplies
  • Travel (Field Trips)
  • Lab Fees
  • Speakers

The NSTI program objectives are to improve STEM (science, technology engineering & mathematics) skills, provide awareness to high school students— particularly minority, female and disadvantaged youth—about transportation careers and encourage them to consider transportation-related courses of study in their higher education pursuits. The NSTI Program, sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, is open to students attending high schools in Sumter, Marengo, Greene, Choctaw, Wilcox, Pickens, Perry, Hale and Clarke counties. The NSTI is an extremely structured learning opportunity for youth in the region.

The curriculum will expose students to new frontiers and adventures such as highway design, transportation of people and cargo, intermodalism, laws, regulations, safety, and career opportunities. In addition, students will participate in standardized applicant test preparation courses, computer training, academic enhancement activities, field trips, and hands-on projects.

The NSTI is a competitive selection process program limited to nine (9) male and nine (9) female students. Incomplete applications will not be accepted, and parents are encouraged to participate in the application process. Guidance counselors are encouraged to identify applicants to the NSTI Program and assist them with completing the forms in the enclosed application package.
