UWA kicks off Higher Education Partnership membership drive

LIVINGSTON — The University of West Alabama kicked off on Wednesday its annual membership drive for faculty and staff who support Alabama’s Higher Education Partnership, the advocacy organization representing supporters of Alabama’s public universities.

During the luncheon held at UWA’s Bell Conference Center attended by some 200 members of the University faculty and staff, nearly 60 UWA employees were recognized for their five-plus years of membership, and 11 were recognized for lifetime membership.

Gordon Stone, executive director of the partnership, served as keynote speaker at the event, offering an update on the statewide need for support at Alabama’s public universities. Stone commended UWA for its dedication to supporting the partnership.

“It’s time for the faculty and staff of Alabama’s universities to take a stand that their work is important and merits strong state support,” Stone said. Stone and his staff congratulated UWA for its proven dedication to promoting higher education in Alabama, evidenced he said, by the high percentage of membership.

For four consecutive years UWA has maintained the highest percentage of faculty and staff membership in the partnership, surpassing the percentage of membership at any other public four-year institution in Alabama. Faculty and staff can join the partnership for as little as $12 per year.

University President Richard D. Holland also spoke to faculty and staff, thanking all who support the partnership by joining and attending the annual Higher Ed Day rally each spring. He extended a special thanks to Vice President of Institutional Advancement Clemit Spruiell and the committee charged with promoting membership. Staff Chair Margaret Hagood and Faculty Chair Dr. Jan Miller lead the membership committee.

UWA faculty member and athletic trainer Dr. R.T. Floyd serves as president of the partnership’s executive council. UWA alumna Courtney P. Taylor serves as vice-president.
