University of West Alabama hosts Alabama History Institute for Teachers

Montgomery, AL (June 11, 2018) – The University of West Alabama (UWA) is hosting an Alabama History Institute (AHI) for grades 3-5 teachers and administrators this week entitled Bridging the Gap: Connecting People and Places to the Classroom. Sponsored by theAlabama Bicentennial Commission and the Alabama Department of Archives and History, this four-day program will provide thirty participants with an immersive, hands-on learning experience, equipping them with new skills, ideas, and techniques to take back to their classrooms this fall.

Twelve institutes are being held throughout Alabama this summer as part of the state’s ongoing bicentennial celebration. Begun in 2017, AHIs are facilitated by master teachers and content specialists and focus on topics ranging from early statehood to voting rights to agriculture and industry and beyond. Bridging the Gap: Connecting People and Places to the Classroom will include in-depth lectures, hands-on learning, and interactive field trips focused on this year’s bicentennial theme, “honoring our people.” When the program concludes next summer, AHIs will have reached over 1,000 educators.

Alabama History Institutes are made possible in part by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC).
