Tigers win Area 6 crown with 13-0 shutout

SELMA — Demopolis (21-5, 4-0) clinched the Class 5A, Area 6 title Friday night with a 13-0 win over Selma.

The Tigers hung four runs on the board in each of the first and third innings and added three in the fourth and two in the second to polish off the five-inning victory.

Wesley Anderson picked up the win, throwing 67 pitches over four innings while allowing one hit and walking two.

Michael Brooker worked a scoreless fifth, pitching around a single and a hit batter with three strikeouts.

Demopolis opened the game by loading the bases when Matt Eicher and Brock Montgomery singled before Mason Rogers was hit by a pitch. Anderson picked up the RBI on a hard fly ball to center that scored Eicher. The centerfielder misplayed the ball, allowing Montgomery to also score on the play.

Devin Stroud followed with a grounder to score Rogers and push the lead to 3-0. Wesley Dunn, who served as the courtesy runner for Anderson, later scored on a passed ball to stretch the advantage to 4-0.

Montgomery led off the third by getting hit by a pitch before Rogers singled. Anderson loaded the bases with a bunt single to set the stage for Stroud to deliver a three-run double and put the Tigers up 7-0. A sacrifice fly by Stephen Stewart plated Stroud to leave Demopolis up 8-0.

Eicher opened the fourth with a single before Rogers stroked a one-out, two-run homer and put Demopolis up 10-0. Anderson drew a walk and gave way to Dunn as courtesy runner. Stewart later ripped a double to plate Dunn and put DHS up 11-0.

Montgomery doubled with one out in the fifth before scoring on an infield single by Anderson. Rogers singled and gave way to courtesy runner Seth Aiken, who scored on a sacrifice fly by Stroud, who ended his night with five RBIs.

Stroud’s five-RBI night led a Demopolis effort that also included two RBIs each by Anderson, Rogers and Stewart.

The Tigers are scheduled to play at Leroy Monday before wrapping up its regular season at home Tuesday against Sweet Water when it will observe Senior Night.

Demopolis is slated to match up with Area 5 runner-up Valley in the first round of the state playoffs next Friday night.
