Tigers score 20 unanswered in second half, defeat Aggies 32-27

Down by 15 at the half, the Demopolis Tigers got a little “coaching” at halftime and responded appropriately. The Tigers offense scored 20 unanswered points and the defense shut out the Jackson Aggies in the second half. The resurgence led to a 32-27 regular season ending victory for the Tigers.

The Aggies struck first at the 10:55 mark of the opening quarter when Deyjun Hunt hit Anthony Daffin for a 57-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good and the Aggies took a 7-0 lead over the Tigers.

11-1-2019 — Jackson, Ala. — Demopolis’ Shatarius Williams hauls in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Stevenson during the Tigers 32-27 win over the Aggies.

At the 6:10 mark of the first quarter, Peyton Stevenson hit Shatarius Williams at the goal line for a 19-yard TD pass. The PAT was block and the Aggies held a 7-6 lead over the Tigers.

With 1:20 to go in the opening quarter, the Aggies’ Hunt found Daffin for their second TD connection, this one from 79 yards out. The PAT was good and the Aggies took a 14-6 lead.

The Tigers answered at the 4:36 mark when C.J. Williams took a pitch from Stevenson and ran it in from 29-yards out. The Tigers’ 2-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Tigers trailing, 14-12.

The Aggies struck again on 71-yard TD pass from Hunt to Jamaal Pritchett. The PAT increased the Aggie lead to 21-12 with 3:44 to go in the second quarter. The Aggies made good on one last possession of the first half when Hunt hit Tylen Campbell for a 22-yard TD pass. The Aggies were unsuccessful on their 2-point conversion, but took a 27-12 lead into halftime.

11-1-2019 — Jackson, Ala. — Demopolis’ Craig Nichols plunges into the end zone during the Tigers 32-27 win over the Aggies.

After some “animated coaching” at halftime, the Tiger defense came out with new life in the second half. The offense also showed some life on their opening possession when Craig Nichols plunged across the goal line from 4-yards out with 10:41 to go in the third quarter. C.J. Williams converted the 2-point attempt and the Tigers closed the gap to 27-20.

With 6:08 to go in the third quarter, Stevenson and Shatarius Williams connected for their second TD pass of the night. The PAT was no good after the 32-yard score, but the Tigers had clawed to within one point of the Aggies, 27-26.

The game winner came with 5:22 left in the game, when C.J. Williams got his second TD run of the night, a 2-yard run through a large mass of humanity. The 2-point conversion was stopped short, but the Tigers owned a 32-27 lead.

The Tiger defense dialed up the pressure on the Aggies and didn’t allow another score and the Tigers claimed the 32-27 victory.

Stevenson connected on 12 of his 24 passes, covering 118 yards and producing two touchdowns. Shatarius Williams caught 7 passes for 79 yards and was on the catching end of the two TD passes. Timothy Grayson added three catches for 39 yards. C.J. Williams was the leading Tiger rusher, totaling 163 yards on 19 carries, and accounted for two TDs on the ground. Nichols had 19 carries for 82 yards and had one TD.

After the win, head coach Brian Seymore talked about being somewhat “animated” at halftime. “I told the guys that we still have a second half to play. We’ve got to go out there and fight to the bitter end. Our guys showed a lot of character. We needed that win.”

The Tigers end the regular season at 7-3, 4-2 in region play. Per the AHSAA website, the Tigers will travel to Birmingham to take on the Ramsay Rams in the first round of the 2019 Class 5a playoffs next Friday night.
