Tiger track sends 12 to state

The Demopolis High School track team saw 12 athltetes qualify for the state track meet at last week’s sectional competition.

The quartet of D’Metric Howell, Demetrius Kemp, Cortez Lewis and Rodney Harper turned in a time of 3:29.14 in the 4×400-meter relay. That time was good enough for second place. Bobby Taylor will serve as the first alternate for the team.

Howell and Harper teamed with Peyton Pearson and Alston Dinning in the 4×800 to turn in a time of 8:54.20. That time earned the team second place at sectionals.

Tyler Coleman qualified for state in two events. Coleman ran an 11.28 in the 100=meter dash to punch his ticket to state. Coleman also ran a 23.28 in the 200-meter to earn his way to state in that event.

Kemp ran a 23.06 in the 200-meter to qualify for one of his two solo events.

Harper ran a 51.10 in the 400-meter dash to earn his way into solo competition.

In girls events, Daneshia Harris ran a 1:06.59 in the 400-meter to take third place in that event.

Gracie Boykins ran a 6:03.9 in the 1600-meter, a mark good enough for fourth place and a spot at state.

Samantha Williams was the lone girls qualifier in field events. She threw a distance of 28-07.00 to take third in shotput.

In boys field events, Tommy Wilson qualified for state in the high jump with a mark of 5-8.

Kemp took first in the long jump with a distance of 21-01.25.

The team will compete in the state meet this weekend in Gulf Shores.
