Sweet Water runs over Fruitdale in Area 1 game

Sweet Water (11-11, 3-0 Class 1A, Area 1) pounded a hapless Fruitdale squad Tuesday, turning in 15 hits and capitalizing on 10 Pirate errors for a 19-1 victory.

The Bulldogs scored on all four innings, opening the game with a six spot in the first. Sara Irvin singled, Kamae Retic reached on an error and Lara Little walked to load the bases. Kora Myers followed with a single to plate Irvin for the 1-0 lead. Eve Myers then reached on an error, allowing Little to score for the 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Kayla Marshall singled in Myers and Myers for the 4-0 advantage. Natalie Luker and Marshall then scored on an error for the 6-0 advantage and the rout was on for the Bulldogs.

Sweet Water added to the lead in the second inning as Little singled in Retic to move it to 7-0. Little later stole home ahead of Marshall singling in Kora Myers to put Sweet Water up 9-0.

Irvin’s grounder to shortstop plated BreAnna Ramsey in the third. Little then tripled home Retic to move it to 11-0. Thea Luker doubled in Madison Smith to open the scoring in the fourth. Irvin then hit a three-run homer to plate Davis and Luker to make it 15-0. Two batters later, Little stroke a two-run shot to score Retic for the 17-0 lead. Smith later reached on an error, allowing Kora Myers to score for the 18-0 lead. Elaina Mitchell capped the scoring with a grounder to plate Eve Myers.

Irvin handled the pitching duties for Sweet Water, striking out seven over four innings of work while scattering three hits and two walks. She surrendered one unearned run.

Sweet Water got three hits out of Little and two each from Irvin, Retic, Kora Myers, Marshall and Thea Luker. Irvin and Little each had four RBIs while Marshall had three.

Thomasville 2, Sweet Water 1

The scoring outbreak followed an extra-inning classic Monday that saw Sweet Water fall 2-1 in extra innings. Thea Luker and Jessika Newberry were masterful for seven innings with each pitcher working out of jams and stranding runners to a scoreless tie through seven.

Thomasville broke through in the eighth when Avery Dement scored on an error with two out. Brelee Vick followed with a single to center that plated Jill Hamilton for the 2-0 lead.

Ramsey started the bottom of the inning on second base for Sweet Water per the international tiebreaker rules. Ramsey stole third and scored on an error to cut the deficit to 2-1. The comeback attempt stopped there as no Sweet Water batter was able to reach in the frame.

Davis and Eve Myers singled for the only Sweet Water hits of the game. Thomasville tallied six hits with Allie Newberry recording three of those including a double for the lone extra-base hit of the game. Vick, Jessika Newberry and Abbigail Carpenter each singled in the game.

Jessika Newberry struck out six over eight innings of work while giving up no earned runs. Thea Luker struck out six over eight while surrendering no earned runs.

Sweet Water is set to host Millry Thursday.
