Sweet Water falls to St. Luke’s in Region 1 opener

Sweet Water dropped its Class 1A, Region 1 opener Friday night with a 33-25 road loss to St. Luke’s.

Braiden Broussard opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run with 7:45 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs soon found themselves playing catch-up as Jermaine Brown hit Jacorey Jacobs for a 14-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter and then hooked up with Trey Bunch for a 10-yard scoring strike in the second quarter.

Chastian Washington scored on an 8-yard sprint with 4:02 left in the opening half before St. Luke’s blocked the ensuing point-after attempt to preserve the lead.

John David Nuetze announced his presence late in the third quarter when he scored on a 23-yard run before Brown found Jacobs again for a 93-yard touchdown strike for a 27-13 lead.

Jacory Brown rumbled for a 15-yard touchdown run to narrow the gap to 27-19. Jermaine Brown upped the lead again for St. Luke’s with a 57-yard run before Jacory Brown capped the scoring with a 10-yard run with 5:31 to play.

The teams were only six yards apart in total offense but St. Luke’s snapped the ball only 32 times while Sweet Water ran 64 plays. Every single Sweet Water yard came via the ground game.

Jermain Brown went 6 for 8 passing for 164 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing 12 times for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Jacory Brown lead Sweet Water with 164 yards on 23 carries.

Sweet Water (0-2, 0-1) hosts Millry next week.
