Star Wars set for outdoor airing May 4

The Demopolis Public Library is partnering with Collins Communications and the Demopolis High School Band to show a free, outdoor movie on Saturday, May 4 in Confederate Park in downtown Demopolis.

The movie being shown is the original Star Wars film. May 4 is often known as “Star Wars Day”. It is jokingly said: “May the 4th be with you”, in reference to the popular phrase in Star Wars: “May the Force be with you.” Children’s Librarian, Kelley Tarpley, though this would be the perfect day to show an outdoor movie and help promote the library’s annual summer reading program. The library has shown an outdoor movie the past five years as part of the summer reading program and the event is always a huge success

“My father took my sister and I to see Star Wars when I was eight years old. We waited over three hours to see this movie and I have been hooked ever since. I have always joked about being a fan of the ‘Dark Side’, even though I was terrified of Darth Vader! The ‘May the 4th’ event was inspired by a website for Star Wars fans. I was not aware that this day was to celebrate ‘all-things-Star-Wars’. After reading about some of the fun activities that fans participate in, I was excited to see that May 4th fell on a Saturday this year. What a perfect way to kick off the library’s summer events. The library invites everyone to come help us celebrate May the 4th Be With You and encourages people to dress as their favorite Star Wars character.”

“We are encouraging people are to bring chairs, blankets and bug spray,” says Library Director, Morgan Grimes. “The movie will start when the sun sets, around 8 p.m. People can come early to reserve a good spot to watch the movie and buy concessions from the Demopolis High School Band.”

The library’s Summer Reading Program will start Monday, June 3, 2013. The themes are “Dig Into Reading” for children, “Beneath the Surface” for teens, and “Groundbreaking Reads” for adults. A calendar of summer reading program events will be available at the movie, on the library’s website demopolislibrary.info, and on the library’s Facebook page.
