Smith no-hitter leads Sweet Water over Fruitdale

With his team riding a three-game losing streak, Jonah Smith righted the ship Thursday. The Bulldog hurler struck out 12 Fruitdale batters over five innings of no-hit baseball to propel Sweet Water to a 12-0 victory.

Sasha Smith reached on an error in the top of the first before scoring on a Will Huckabee single to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Hunter Mendenhall scored after a John Thomas Etheridge single in the second to push it to 2-0. Shamar Lewis then grounded in Luke Davis to make it 3-0. Etheridge scored on a sacrifice fly from Sasha smith to set the lead at 4-0.

Sweet Water tacked on another run in the top of the fourth when Mendenhall doubled before coming in on an Etheridge single for the 5-0 lead. Sweet Water went on to break the game wide open with seven runs in the top of the fifth.

Jonah Smith single in Braiden Broussard before Reid Joiner’s sacrifice fly plated Huckabee to make it 7-0. Two batters later, Luke Davis blasted a three-run shot to drive in Chastain Washington and R.J. Rodgers to set the lead at 10-0. Sasha Smith later singled in Etheridge and Lewis to set the final tally.

Sweet Water (11-3, 1-0) hosts Fruitdale for a double-header Friday. The Bulldogs head to the Gulf Coast Classic next week where they will face Clarksville (Tenn.), Oneonta, Oak Mountain and Shades Mountain Christian.
