Short Council meeting hears options for Ash Street ditch

In a meeting that took about 15 minutes Thursday, the Demopolis City Council took care of a few business items and learned of ongoing efforts to end the raw sewage problem on Ash Street.

District 4 Councilman Bill Meador presided since Mayor Woody Collins was attending the lighting of the Public Square going on at the same time, and Mayor Pro-Tem Charles Jones Jr. is recovering from COVID-19.

Richard Fountain again appeared before the Council concerning the raw sewage running in a ditch behind his home on Ash Street, an issue he has been fighting for 25 years.

Project director Mike Baker said efforts are being made to find equipment or a company that can use cameras to inspect the storm sewer near Fountain’s home to try to discover the source of the leakage. Baker said an engineer is studying options to cover the ditch, taking into consideration the costs involved and the permitting that is required.

In 2016 the city began giving a one-time pay adjustment to full time and permanent part time employees during the holidays. The practice continued Thursday when the Council voted to give full time employees $100 and part time, $50.

In other business the Council:

  • Approved the October financials
  • Adjusted the Demopolis Police Department budget for covering the Demopolis High School football games.
  • Tabled until the next meeting an appointment to fill a vacancy on the Industrial Development Board left when Woody Collins became mayor.
