Short Council meeting ends with praise of community for support of COTR

Only one action item held the attention of the Demopolis City Council Wednesday in a meeting that took less than 10 minutes.

At the last meeting the council okayed vacating a northern portion of Desounettes Avenue. The action needed a formal resolution from the Council, which was approved Thursday.

The Council meeting date was moved to Wednesday to eliminate conflict with opening Christmas on the River festivities.

Mayor Woody Collins praised city workers and members of the business community for their support, especially in preparation for COTR.

“I want to publicly say thank you to all the city employees,” he said. “They have done a wonderful, wonderful job.”

The mayor said he has received nothing but positive comments from the community about the way the city workers have handled Christmas decorations.

“Demopolis has forever in my opinion had a business community and a corporate community that are the most giving in west central Alabama,” he continued.

He singled out Two Rivers Lumber Company for its generosity in purchasing the 32-foot Santa set up in the Public Square that day. The Santa will be moved to the Civic Center after the lighting of the square Thursday to open COTR.
