Short council meeting amends action, has updates on projects

Only one item of business received a vote in a seven-minute Demopolis City Council meeting Thursday and that was to re-approve a previous resolution with changes.

At its Dec. 1 meeting, the Council voted to vacate the northern portion of Desnouettes Street at the request of Mem Webb. However, the resolution didn’t include a map of the street. The vote Thursday corrected the error.

In Council discussions, Councilman David McCants got assurances that the Demopolis Fire and Rescue Department and the Water and Sewer Board would work to repair and replace the damaged fire hydrant on Cedar Street.

Park and Rec Department head Walker Reynolds said the contractor finally was able to begin pouring concrete again Thursday to complete the boat ramp at the City Landing. That work has to be finished before the parking lot can be paved. When conditions permit, pylons will be driven into the riverbed for the floating dock. Reynolds said it is hoped the new boat landing will be ready by late March or early April.

Projects manager Mike Baker told the council six drainage projects are being evaluated for cost and feasibility, and he will be able to report possibly by the next meeting.
