Seniors treated to SALT luau

Bright Hawaiian colors, lots of laughter and plenty of fun were the orders of the day at the First United Methodist Church as SALT of Demopolis welcomed about 50 people to the first open house recognizing Senior Adult Appreciation Week.

Regular SALT participants welcomed visitors from the Theo Ratliff Senior Citizens group, West Alabama Senior Center, Southern Care, Woodhaven Nursing Home and Demopolis City Schools PTA to the luau, complete with palm trees, pineapples, leis and even hula skirts.

The event starting with guests painting shells and working on word search puzzles. They joined in a spirited game of Noodle Ball and took part in light exercise before enjoying lunch. They also were treated to a steel drum concert by Keith Owings and “fire baton” twirling by Laura Clements.

Special recognition was given to Sylvia Holland, former Miss Alabama Nursing Home, who shared her love of watercolor paintings with the group and some of the lessons she learned along the way.

SALT (Senior Adults Living Triumphantly) has spearheaded the first Senior Adult Appreciation Week in the city. Businesses churches and school groups have joined in offering recognition and treats to the city’s citizens who are 65 and older.
