Senior-led Demopolis team looking for golf glory

The Demopolis High School golf team is scheduled to open its 2014 season next week. As their first match approaches, the senior-heavy team is looking to improve upon the success it has had over the last two seasons.

“We’ve been undefeated through regular season play the last two years in a row,” Demopolis High golf coach Mike Black said. “We’ve got a good team coming back. We should be pretty good. This will be their last chance to get it. These last two years, they came out of sectionals and went to sub-state.”

The team’s top five players are all seniors led by returning No. 1 player Braden Spiller. The senior quartet of Blake Bryant, Chandler Stuedeman, Sam Yeager and Jordan Williams also figures to see the bulk of the time in seeded match-play.

Anna Reid, Mark Joseph Johnson and Jonah Webb will provide depth to the roster.

The squad will face most of the same teams it has seen in recent years. The biggest hiccup to the Demopolis High golf team’s season, according to Black, may be the ability to find teams to play.

“We’re going to play most of the same people we’ve playing. It’s hard to get people out of Tuscaloosa to play us. We were playing close to Birmingham, but they’ve been shutting some of these places down,” Black said. “The Capstone up around Brookwood, they shut it down. And I’ve been talking to the coach at Thomasville and he told me we may not get to play down there. We may have to play up here because they’re thinking about shutting the country club down in Thomasville because they can’t keep it up.”
