Powell resigns as USJ principal; bonus contracts okayed

In a short, called meeting Thursday, the Demopolis City Schools Board of Education approved two hires and the resignation of U.S. Jones principal Bridget Powell.

Approved unanimously pending receipt of documents were Breunde Moultrie and Angela Lee, both elementary teachers. Powell’s resignation was approved by a 4-1 vote.

Alabama has implemented bonuses for math and science teachers if they agree to enhanced STEM training certification and giving up their tenure. This year 21 math and science teachers in the DCS system have opted to receive the bonus, and the board approved those contracts.

Supt. Tony Willis said math and science teachers who opt for the program receive an extra $10,000, plus another $5,000 if they teach in a hard-to-hire area, which Demopolis is designated. A teacher with more than 20 years receives even more.

Willis said everything above the normal school system salary is reimbursed by the state. Alabama has said up to 28 teachers in the DCS system would be covered.

The contract for Brandi M. Smith, approved earlier as the new principal of Demopolis Middle School, was approved. Her term begins July 1.
