Pitching pushes Demopolis JV to sweep

The Demopolis junior varsity baseball team (5-1-1) swept Sweet Water in a double-header Thursday night, taking the opener 14-4 and the nightcap 6-0.

Strong complete game pitching performances from Luke Yelverton and Adam Sellers anchored the the victories. Yelverton (3-1)struck out 10 batters over five innings while allowing just three hits and two earned runs in the opener.

Sellers (1-0) fanned 14 over five innings in the back end of the twin bill while surrendering only one hit in the contest.

“We had two pretty good performances on the mound and made the routine plays we needed to make,” Demopolis JV coach Kevin May said. “We are still not where we need to be at the plate. We have got to be more focused and improve on moving runners over and getting the ball in play in key situations.”

Ryan Schroeder singled and walked in the opener. Sellers went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jacob Rodrigues went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. Clay White was 1-for-1 with three walks and two RBIs. Tripp Perry went 1-for-4 with a double. Matthew Trest went 1-for-2 with a walk. Seth Latham walked and drove in a run.

Schroeder tripled in the nightcap. Seth Aiken went 1-for-3 with a RBI. Sellers drove in a run. White singled, walked and drove in a run.

The Tigers are scheduled to play again Saturday, March 23 in Montgomery in a double-header against Trinity Presbyterian.
