Payne improved day two to lead Tigers in Armstrong Pirate Women’s Invitational

rp_primary_Golf_14-01-31_251POOLER, Ga. – West Alabama women’s golf finished round two of the Armstrong Pirate Women’s Invitational with a score of 351 to place 14th out of 16 at the Savannah Quarters Country Club on Tuesday.

UWA carded 699 through both rounds to finish ahead of Barton College with 717 and Notre Dame College (Ohio) with 770.

Savannah Payne improved by nine strokes in round two to finish the second day 10-over par 82. She shot a combined 29-over 173 to lead the Tigers in 51st place.

“Savannah played really solid today,” said UWA head golf coach Adam Buie. “All the girls fought through borderline unplayable conditions today, but we played hard and didn’t give up. That’s all I could ask.”

Jessica Smyth and Ida Bergli remain tied through the second day, each carding a combined 30-over 174 to tie for 57th place.

Christine Stryken ended 72nd with 181, followed by Tori Smith with 182.

Host school Armstrong Atlantic topped nationally ranked No. 7 Flagler by four strokes in day two to win the tournament with a combined score of 619. Flagler ended with 623.

West Alabama women’s golf will return to the course in the Lady Argonaut Invitational hosted by West Florida, March 30 – April 1 in Pensacola, Fla.
