Overtime field goal lifts Sweet Water over Southern Choctaw

SILAS — It took an overtime period to resolve it, but Sweet Water (4-3, 3-2) got a 23-yard field goal from Deshawn Blanks to knock of Southern Choctaw 24-21 Friday night.

The Bulldogs carried a 14-7 lead into the fourth quarter before Jordan Pope found Thomas McGrew for a 24-yard touchdown strike. The missed extra point left Sweet Water up 14-13 with 9:06 to play.

Southern Choctaw got its second defensive touchdown of the night with 3:45 to play when Matthew Hill scooped and scored from 83 yards out to give the Indians a 19-13 lead. Pope added the conversion run for the 21-14 Southern Choctaw lead.

Sweet Water struck 23 seconds later to tie the game when Branson Davis hit Eric Jenkins for a 67-yard touchdown pass. Blanks hit the extra point to knot it at 21 all.

Sweet Water opened the scoring 30 seconds into the game when Jenkins broke a 25-yard touchdown run. Jaylin Johnson added a 36-yard scoring sprint with 7:05 left in the opening quarter to make it 14-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Sweet Water outgained Southern Choctaw 344-215 but lost three fumbles on the night.

Jenkins led the Bulldogs with 137 yards on 21 carries. Johnson added 82 yards on 15 carries. R.J. Rodgers had 41 yards on four carries. Sweet Water hosts Choctaw County next week and can lock up a playoff spot with a win.
