Odom has double-double in UWA women’s win

rp_primary_Q_OdomLIVINGSTON, Ala. – Quentinette Odom scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead West Alabama to a 70-52 women’s basketball victory over Stillman Thursday at Pruitt Hall Gymnasium.

The victory improved the Tigers to 2-0. Stillman dropped to 0-2.

For the second consecutive game UWA limited its opponent to less than 20 percent shooting in the first half. Tuskegee managed just four first-half field goals Wednesday night and the Tigers held Stillman to five on Thursday. The visitors from Tuscaloosa got their first basket at the 12:40 mark of the first half.

“We are doing a good job of positioning ourselves on defense,” UWA head coach Craig Roden said. “We still have more work to do guarding the basketball and getting a line on the ball, but we still don’t have our entire defense in yet.”

Odom made the most of her trips to the free throw line, going 12-for-12 to lead a 26-for-34 (76%) effort for West Alabama. The Tigers also outrebounded Stillman 45-31 while limiting SC to a 1-for-17 night from the three-point line.

“It’s not an accident that Quentinette had a double-double. She is facing up and shooting the ball,” Roden said. “After getting caught in a numbers game last year and not playing as much as I’m sure she wanted to, she worked on things to get better in the offseason.”

West Alabama led 33-21 at the half, but a 9-0 run gave the Tigers a 54-33 lead with just over nine minutes to play and UWA never looked back.

“We were careless with the basketball early and kept them in it,” Roden said. “We helped them keep it to a 10-11 point game at the half when we could have been up more.”

Jada Williams scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to follow Odom. Eleven of the 12 players who took the floor for UWA scored.

Angel Mitchell was the only Stillman player in double figures with 17 points. Samantha Thomas and Mitchell each got seven rebounds.

West Alabama travels to Miles on Monday, while Stillman is host to Concordia on Saturday.
