New trash pick-up system goes into effect May 1

Beginning May 1, Demopolis officially opens its dedicated line for residents to request yard debris and white goods pickup.

Ashford Jackson, Public Works director, is announcing the change in procedure now because “we want to give the people time to get ready.”

He also asked citizens to be patient as the department implements the new system. It is hoped the change in pick-up procedure will lead to a more efficient department and cost savings for the city.

The phone line is operational now, but trash pick-up will continue under the existing method until the first of May.

Pick-ups can be scheduled on Mondays and Fridays by calling the automated phone line at 334-654-4330. Residents will be required to give their name, phone number, address and a brief description of what needs to be picked up.

Jackson asked that limbs be separated from white goods. Grass clippings, leaves and small bush trimmings will be picked up only if they are placed in bags. Tree limbs must be no more than 15 inches in diameter and eight feet long.

All items must be placed neatly behind the curb and out of the street.

Building debris such as lumber, plaster, roofing, concrete, bricks or similar materials resulting from the construction, repair or demolition of any building or structure on private property, including dirt and rocks from landscaping, will not be removed by the Public Works Department, Jackson stressed. The owner or contract labor is responsible for this waste to be removed.

More information on the new system is available by calling 289-3879.
