Nathan Sims named DAR Good Citizen for DHS

Nathan Lane Sims of Demopolis High School is the recipient of Bigbee Valley Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizens Award and the Essay Contest.

The award and contest, created in 1934, encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship in high school seniors across the United States.

The Good Citizens Award recognizes students who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. They are selected by their teachers and peers.

Two Choctaw County schools, Sumter Central High School and DHS took the opportunity to take part in the program. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the chapter was not able to recognize these students and their families at a meeting this year, but each student was mailed a pin and certificate to mark this achievement.

Nathan, whose parents are Jaclyn Cothran and Timothy Sims, is a member of the National Beta Club.  He won the Young Author’s Symposium Award his sophomore year, is a member of the cross-country team, participates in theatre and enjoys volunteering at the local animal shelter.

Since one of his major interests is the universe, Nathan plans to major in astrophysics then pursue his doctorate and continue his research to learn more about the world.

Other recipients of the Good Citizen Awards are Evan Cole Nix of Patrician Academy, Katie Elise Jenkins of South Choctaw Academy and Antonio Mario Hutchins of Sumter Central High School.

These students will be recognized at their individual Awards Day ceremonies in the spring.
