Mullen receives Jimmy Rane Foundation Scholarship

ABBEVILLE, Ala. – Tristan Mullen of Demopolis will have help attending Samford University this fall, thanks to his selection as a Jimmy Rane Foundation scholar. Moore is among 36 students selected to receive a scholarship from the foundation this year. A 2018 graduate of Demopolis High School, he will major in history.

Mullen was active in a high school, serving as president of the Tiger Arts Guild and as co-captain of the Scholars Bowl Team. He was an officer on the Student Council and DECA and also a member of the high school band, the BETA Club, YOUthLead Demopolis and Librarian’s Club. In addition, he was member of the Canebrake Players, a community theater group and was selected as a 2018 United States Senate Youth Program Delegate. As part of the Demopolis High School Community Service Endorsement Program, Mullen logged more than 200 hours of community service through such activities as helping at a nursing home, soup kitchen, local churches and the YMCA.

He expressed appreciation for his scholarship award. “I was overjoyed and extremely grateful when I learned that I had been awarded this scholarship,” Mullen said. “Growing up in a less privileged community has not only offered financial and academic challenges, but has also helped me realize the value of a college education.”

Mullen added, “As a fifth-generation college student (something rare for African Americans), I am proud to carry on the legacy of higher education within my family. This scholarship helps to make this goal a reality for me.”

The Jimmy Rane Foundation has awarded 383 college scholarships to outstanding, well-deserving students since its establishment in 2000. Jimmy Rane, founder of Abbeville-based Great Southern Wood Preserving, Incorporated, hosts the Foundation’s annual golf tournament each May as the single fundraising event for the Foundation, which draws both corporate and individual sponsors. The golf tournament brings together more than 70 sports celebrities and has featured guest speakers such as Terry Bradshaw, Taya Kyle, Marcus Luttrell, Kirk Herbstreit, Peyton Manning, and Dabo Swinney.
