Montgomery, Sanders earn Watchman volleyball awards
Overdue but not forgotten, The West Alabama Watchman took nominations and recommendations from local coaches to put together its All-County Volleyball Team for the 2014 season.
For the second consecutive season, Demopolis High setter Jade Montgomery takes home Player of the Year honors. Montgomery followed up a strong junior campaign with a scintillating senior season in which she led her team to a 21-5 record as both the team’s best server and its purest passer.
Montgomery’s volleyball IQ was unparalleled within the county and her hustle and leadership proved key elements in translating the game that so richly flows through her bloodlines into an on-court performance that led to a new school record for wins in a single season.
Montgomery ends her Demopolis High School career with 48 wins in four years, having started each season at either setter, hitter or libero.
The West Alabama Watchman Coach of the Year Award goes to Demopolis High’s Angela Sanders. The former University of West Alabama player made her varsity coaching debut in 2014, going 21-5 and shattering the previous mark for wins in a single season (14) that had been set just a year earlier.
Sanders ignited a new-look offense to lead the Lady Tigers to within inches of the second round of the Super Regional Tournament.
