Marengo Sports Hall of Fame seeks nominations

The Marengo County Sports Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for its next class.

The induction banquet will be held next February. Any person may submit the name of an accomplished athlete who is from Marengo County or who had a long-time impact on Marengo County athletics.

“The selection committee has had to make some tough decisions in the past, but we feel they’ve made some excellent choices,” said MCSOF Secretary/Treasurer Tony Speegle. “We have been very pleased with the number of nominations in the past, but we would always like to see that number increase.”

Nomination packages are due before Oct. 1, and should include the following information about the athlete:

  • A strong letter of recommendation
  • A biographical sheet
  • A statistics sheet
  • A head-and-shoulders picture and/or action photo

To be eligible, the athlete must be retired for at least a year, or have attained the age of 40.

Nominations can be sent to:

Tom Boggs, P.O. Box 784, Demopolis, AL 36732 or Tony Speegle, 1012 Jacob Drive, Demopolis, AL 36732.

Both Boggs, who is Chairman of the MCSHOF, and Speegle agree that the organization plays an important role in the county. In addition to recognizing the athletes’ accomplishments, the Hall of Fame serves to bring the entire county together.

“We’ve had a lot of great athletes come down the pike over the years, and I feel very confident that Marengo County will continue to produce excellent athletes,” Boggs said. “The banquet is an opportunity for people from all over the county to come together. The banquet has grown since we held the first one in 2009. Now each year we provide a scholarship, and we also recognize a championship team (from the past).”

Boggs encouraged individuals to submit nominations, and to keep an eye out for banquet ticket sales in late December or early January. “It’s usually a sellout,” he said.
