Marengo softball wins five straight

After a 4-2 Spring Break win against Wilcox, the Marengo Academy picked up four more victories during the week following.

On Tuesday, the Longhorns defeated area opponent Jackson Academy 11-1 and 15-0. Two days later, the Lady Longhorns defeated region opponent Southern Academy 14-4 and finished the week off with a win on Friday against Class AA Clarke Prep 11-1.

Against Wilcox on March 28, the Longhorns led off with a double by Mary Grace Sheffield who then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Riley Newton. A SAC fly by Macey Petrey scored Sheffield to put the Longhorns up 1-0 after one inning. The score remained there until the third when the Wildcats tied it up with a homer by Sidney Sessions. In the fourth, the Longhorns led off with a double by Macey Petrey. Trinity Wilkinson followed with a RBI single to score Petrey, bringing the score 2-1. After, the Wildcats tied the score 2-2 early in the fifth, the Longhorns capitalized on a sixth inning walk by Riley Newton. Petrey singled to move Newton over to third. A walk by Wilkinson loaded the bases. Carley Vickers reached on an error but got the RBI scoring Newton. Hannah Freeman singled to left field to score Petrey, bringing the score 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth.  The Wildcats were unable to answer in the seventh giving the Lady Longhorns a big win over AA Wilcox Academy.

On April 4, the Longhorns met area opponent Jackson Academy for a doubleheader. Mary Grace Sheffield started the Longhorns off with a double followed by a RBI single by Petrey. Trinity Wilkinson singled then scored off a Jessie flowers single RBI to put the Longhorns up 3-0 after one. In the second, Sheffield opened with a triple followed by a RBI double by Newton. Petrey doubled, sending Newton home for the RBI. Davis reached on an error to score Petrey and Flowers got the SAC fly to score Wilkinson, who reached on an error to bring the score 7-0 after two innings. In the third, Morgan Broadhead singled followed by singles from Sheffield, Newton and Petrey.

Petrey’s single scored Broadhead and Sheffield to move the score to 9-0 after three. The fourth inning saw hits by Adrienne Griffith, Mikayla Etheredge, and Morgan Broadhead. Sheffield scored Griffith and Etheredge, bringing the final score 11-1 after the Eagles scored a run in the fourth.

In the second game against Jackson, Sheffield led with a single followed by a RBI double by Riley Newton. Wilkinson doubled, scoring Newton to set the score at 2-0 after two innings of play. The big third inning saw every single batter in the Longhorn lineup on base on the way to 11 runs to bring the score 13-0. The fourth inning sent Sheffield and Freeman across the plate to score two more, bringing the final score to 15-0.

On Thursday, April 6, the Longhorns defeated Southern Academy. Riley Newton started off with a single and a stolen base followed by a RBI single by Petrey to put the score at 1-0 after one inning of play. Morgan Broadhead opened the second with a single. Sheffield reached on a bunt followed by a RBI single by Newton. Petrey ripped a three-run homer, clearing the bases. Wilkinson stepped to the plate with a single. Flowers reached on an error but scored Wilkinson for the RBI. Hannah Freeman reached on an error followed by a two-RBI single by Broadhead, bringing the score to 8-2 after two innings. The Cougars were able to add two more in the third, bringing the score 8-4 after three innings. In the fourth, Freeman started with a bunt single. Sheffield put one more on the board with a double, scoring Freeman to put the score at 9-4 after four innings of play.

In the fifth, Petrey stroked her second homerun of the evening, bringing the score 10-4. In the sixth, Taylor Jordan opened with a single, Sheffield reached on an error, and Newton stroked a single with two RBIs. Petrey followed with a single before a double by Wilkinson to notch two more RBIs, bringing the final score 14-4. Taylor Jordan got the win in the circle.

On Friday, the Longhorns defeated the Clarke Prep Gators 11-1. The first and second innings were scoreless for both teams. The third inning finally saw some action with Taylor Jordan leading off with a single, followed by Sheffield. Newton reached on a fielder’s choice and got the RBI. Petrey then hit a double for two RBIs.

A couple of errors put Wilkinson and Davis on the bases. Freeman singled for an RBI, bringing the score to 6-0. Riley Newton started off the fourth with a single followed by a Petrey single. Brittan Davis also singled, loading the bases. Freeman singled for one RBI and Flowers followed with a RBI single. Broadhead continued the trend with a RBI single, bringing the score to 9-1 after four as the Gators put one run across the plate.

The fifth saw Riley Newton on base with a walk. Petrey followed with a homer over deep center to plate the final two runs. Brittan Davis also singled in the fifth. Taylor Jordan got the win in the circle in that one as well.
