Marengo County basketball teams fall in area play
All six AHSAA girls teams in Marengo County can call it a season after the last five remaining were beaten in the opening round of area tournament play Thursday night.
In Class 1A, Area 1, the Marengo Lady Panthers fell to McIntosh 72-69 in a contest played at St. Luke’s Episcopal in Mobile.
After ousting A.L. Johnson 48-43 Monday, John Essex ran into top-seeded host Sunshine Thursday night, bowing out of the Class 1A, Area 4 draw with a 70-15 loss.
Linden also stumbled in round one of the Area 4 tournament, losing to Akron 81-43.
In Class 2A, Area 5, the Sweet Water Lady Bulldogs lost to No. 1 seed host Southern Choctaw 48-21.
Demopolis fell to Selma 34-30 in Class 5A, Area 6 in a game played at Sumter Central High School.
The county’s final girls team, Marengo Academy, is still alive in semi-finals of the AISA Class A state tournament and is scheduled to play Patrician Academy at Huntingdon College in Montgomery Wednesday at 9 a.m.
In boys action, Marengo High lost to J.U. Blacksher 61-55 Tuesday, losing out in the play-in game of the AHSAA Class 1A, Area 1 tournament. A.L. Johnson lost its play-in matchup against John Essex 68-49 Tuesday, making an early exit from the Class 1A, Area 4 boys draw.
The county’s four remaining AHSAA boys teams are all scheduled to play tonight. Linden is set to host John Essex in Class 1A, Area 4. Sweet Water will play No. 1 seed Choctaw County in Class 2A, Area 5 while Demopolis takes on Greenville in Class 5A, Area 6.
Marengo Academy’s boys lost to Lakeside Wednesday in the first round of the AISA Class A state tournament.
