Largest city paving project kicks off

In what Mayor John Laney called a celebration, city officials and engineers with Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood gathered in front of the Demopolis City Hall Tuesday to officially begin a record paving project.

Gathering to kick off the record paving project are, from left, first row, Ed Niel and Alicia Brightwell with Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood; Mayor John Laney, Cedric Campbell, GMC, and councilman Cleveland Cole; and back row, Mike Baker, manager of projects and councilmen Charles Jones, Jr, Bill Meador and Harris Nelson.

Manager of Projects Mike Baker said the $3 million project is the largest the city has ever done. It is expected to pave 39 streets.

Laney said all areas and districts of Demopolis are included in the plans. When finished, he added, the newly paved roads will enhance the city’s economic development and improve the quality of life for its residents.

S.T. Bunn is the general contractor for the paving. The firm also has a contract with the state to resurface U.S. 43 from the King Bridge to U.S. Hwy. 80.
