Lady Tigers overwhelm Sumter in area opener

The Lady Tigers of Demopolis (7-5, 1-0) entered Friday night’s region opener with what looked to be a chip on the shoulder. If they did indeed look to make a boisterous statement, their mission was accomplished as they tamed the Lady Jaguars of Sumter Central by a final of 65-45.

The contest opened with a fast-paced tempo that no doubt favored DHS Ladies. Two breakaway buckets by Sylvia Clayton, both courtesy of great down-court passing from her teammates, preluded a 21-4 run that took place the remaining 5:45. The run was masterfully executed with unselfish passing, great vision, and proper finishes around the rim. Four different Tigers contributed in the run, giving DHS the 23-7 first period lead.

The Lady Jags answered back slightly in the second thanks to the three-point shot—a shot in which SCHS needed to make in order to have any chance against a Tiger squad filled with length. Their three triples helped the Jags secure 11 second-period points only to be outdone once more by a Tiger squad that functioned much like a well-oiled machine all night long.

Demopolis High’s Erica Bennett and Caleb Washington led all scorers at the break with 10 points apiece. A host of tigers saw at least five or more points themselves including Ivery Moore, DeeDee White and Clayton

The Lady Tigers didn’t let off the gas pedal coming out of the break, scoring 19 third-period points on their way to 30 second-half points that would easily be enough to secure their much anticipated area home opener by the final of 65-45.

Demopolis had four players finish in double figures.

Leading the way was Bennett who finished with 16 points including 2-of-4 from downtown.

Moore finished her multi-dimensional performance with 13 points.

Washington scored all 10 of her points in the first half as she finished with 12 rebounds followed by White, who also had 10.

SCHS adies were led by Keona May. May hit five 3-pointers en route to a 17 point performance.

Khadijah Thomas would be the only other Lady Jag in double figures as she finished with 10.
