Lady Tigers down Dallas County for area win

The Demopolis High varsity volleyball team (2-1, 1-0) picked up its first area win of the Angela Sanders era Tuesday when it hit the road to down Dallas County 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-12).

“I believe our biggest improvement is our hustle and confidence,” Sanders said, noting the improvements her squad has made since splitting a season-opening tri-match with Selma and Thomasville. “We do not hesitate anymore to go after a ball and we are more aggressive on the court than ever before.”

The Lady Tigers also got a win from their junior varsity squad, which downed Dallas County’s JV 2-0.

“They played outstanding,” Sanders said of the JV Lady Tigers. “I was extremely impressed with the level of skill they were displaying. If I were an outsider watching the game, I would have thought I was watching a varsity team. No matter who I put on the court for JV and varsity, I had confidence and knew each girl could handle whatever obstacles were thrown their way. Some girls tried new positions and some I had trying new skills. Even with everything I was telling them to do, they took it and they showed everyone they could handle the pressure.”

Demopolis is set to resume play Thursday when it travels to Hale County for both JV and varsity contests.

“I have an exceptional group of 24 that have improve greatly in the last three months along with a supportive manager and assistant coach,” Sanders said. “If we continue to improve at the rate we are going, I have no doubts in my mind we will go farther than this team has ever been before.”
