Greenville forfeits three games, Demopolis clinches playoff berth

Demopolis has clinched the No. 3 seed in Class 5A, Region 3 without even taking the field. The Alabama High School Athletic Association reported Tuesday that Greenville will forfeit three games after self reporting the usage of an academically ineligible player in three of its victories.

“We want to win. We owe Hillcrest for the last two or three years. They beat us 2010, 2011 and 2012,” Demopolis High head coach Tom Causey said of whether the news takes pressure off his team when it takes the field Thursday night at Hillcrest.

The forfeiture shifts Greenville’s record to 1-8 overall and 1-6 in the region.

Greenville forfeits wins over Citronelle, Satsuma and Sumter Central, but the ineligible player did not play against Demopolis.

Demopolis clinches the No. 3 seed and will travel to St. Paul’s in the first round of the state playoffs. Selma is the No. 4 seed and will head to Spanish Fort.

Demopolis has not missed the state playoffs since 1995.
