Fulbright scholar to lecture and demonstrate Chinese Calligraphy at UWA

谷成[6]LIVINGSTON — The University of West Alabama continues its 2013-2014 Fulbright Lecture Series as Dr. Cheng Gu will present “History of Chinese Calligraphy and a Demonstration” on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. in the Tigers Den at UWA’s Student Union Building.

Hosted by UWA’s College of Business, Gu is an associate dean and professor in the School of Public Finance and Taxation at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in Dalian, China.

Gu’s areas of expertise include taxation and intergovernmental fiscal relations. He has published four books, three of which are sponsored by Ministry of Education of China, Liaoning Provincial Education Department, and Dalian Municipal Government.

Gu has done research on income taxation, commodity taxation, property taxation, and fiscal decentralization, and has published numerous articles in China’s academic journals. His findings on China’s fiscal decentralization has been universally accepted and referenced by Chinese scholars.

IMG_0222[8]As principal investigator, Gu has directed more than 30 scientific research projects sponsored by U.S. Department of State, Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Education of China, Scientific Research Foundation for the Returned Overseas Chinese Scholars, Liaoning Provincial Education Department, Liaoning Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science, Liaoning Provincial Federation of Social Science Circles, and Finance Department of Liaoning Province.

Gu has been recognized for his work in public finance through the Excellent Monograph granted by Ministry of Education of China in 2010, Science and Technology Award of Dalian Conference of Social Science 2011, First Prize of Liaoning Natural Science Achievements 2011, First Prize of Liaoning Investigation Report 2010, and Excellent monograph of Dalian Municipality, 2010.

IMG_0199[6]In 2006 he was honored an Excellent Teacher of University in Liaoning Province, and one of 100-Liaoning New Century Talents in 2009.

Gu was named a Prominent Scholar for Academic Achievement by Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, and an Excellent Talent of Universities of Liaoning Province in 2010.

He was awarded a New Century Excellent Talent in University appointed by Ministry of Education of China in 2011 and an Excellent Expert of Dalian Municipality in 2013.

His professional memberships include Academic committee in Chinese Tax Institute; chief director of Tax Education Committee of China; director of Tax Institute of Liaoning Province; expert of National Natural Science Foundation of China for Peer Appraisal; expert of Social Science Foundation of Ministry of Education in China; honor researcher of Dalian Social Science Institution; and expert of Science Plan of Dalian Municipality.
