First Responders to hold Christmas ‘parade’ through city

In an effort to bring a little normalcy to a Christmas season that is anything but, the Demopolis Police Department and the Demopolis Fire and Rescue Department have planned their version of a parade through the city Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Beginning at 1 p.m. the fire trucks, police cars and other vehicles taking part in the parade will line up in the parking lot behind the Police Department. They will follow a route that will take them through each of the city’s five precincts for the enjoyment of children of all ages.

Riding in places of honor will be Santa Claus and everyone’s favorite Christmas villain, the Grinch.

Mayor Woody Collins said at the City Council meeting Thursday that the police and fire personnel have come together quickly to put on the parade.

From the Police Department the parade will go east on Capitol Street, turn left on Walnut Avenue, turn right on Jackson Street and continue to Maria Avenue.

After turning left on Maria, the parade will turn right onto Cherokee Street. When it reaches Mauvilla Drive it will turn left in front of Westside Elementary and stay on Mauvilla until it turns into Marengo Drive. The parade will continue until it reaches Powe Road and turns left back to Maria Avenue.

This time it will turn left on Maria to Herbert Street where it will turn right. Traveling on Herbert, the parade will turn left on Desounettes Avenue, right on Canal Street, and return to Walnut.

At Walnut the vehicles will turn left to Pettus Street and continue all the way to U.S. Highway 80 where it will turn left. It quickly will make a right turn onto Lincoln Street, then left on A Street to Center Avenue, where the parade will turn right.

From Center it will turn left onto Laura Street and travel to Old Springhill Road, ending at U.S. 43 South. Turning right, the parade will cross U.S. Highway 80 again and turn right at McNamara Road. It will turn left on Arcola Road, right on Third Avenue and left on Jackson Street.

The last leg of the parade will be right from Jackson on Ash Street until it reaches Capitol Street to end where it began.
