ESPN 104.9 honors Colburn
Demopolis may have lost its season opener 18-14 to Thomasville but very little of that loss can be laid at the feet of the Tiger defense. And on that night, the leader of the Demopolis defensive effort was senior Tyler Colburn.
New to the defensive line position, Colburn played like a veteran last week against Thomasville, all but living in the THS backfield.
Colburn tallied 15 tackles, including five tackles for loss on the evening in addition to blocking an extra point.
But the highlight play of the night for Colburn came during a series in which Thomasville had driven deep into Demopolis territory. With a Thomasville score appearing all but guaranteed, Colburn penetrated the offensive line and blasted the ball carrier, jarring the ball loose. As the ball flew 12 yards from the spot of the hit, Colburn scrambled to his feet and outran a handful of players to recover the fumble he created.
For his efforts, Colburn earned the ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show/West Alabama Watchman Player of the Week award.
The crew of the ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show presented Colburn with a commemorative T-shirt and honored him during the broadcast Tuesday night at Batter Up Sports Grill in Demopolis.
Colburn becomes the second winner of the award for the 2014 season. Sumter Academy’s Blaine Winsett won the award a week ago. Winsett played offensive line, defensive line and middle line backer in the Eagles’ 27-0 win over Park Place of Mississippi.
