Dual enrollment swells fall numbers at WCCS-Demopolis

The rise in student enrollment at the Demopolis campus of Wallace Community College Selma came as the result of a strong dual enrollment program that allows high school students the opportunity to take college-level courses for credit.

The Demopolis campus serving West Alabama reported 396 dually enrolled students this fall, thanks in part to more than $300,000 in Dual Enrollment Scholarships, said Blaine Hathcock, Demopolis Campus Director.

Demopolis High School registered 133 students; Hale County, 103; Greene County, 39; Marengo County, 43; Perry County, 54; Sumter County, 11 and University Charter, Livingston, 13.

“We are excited to see the growth in dual enrollment numbers for area,” said Hathcock. “Dual enrollment is a great way for students to get a head start on college while still in high school. We look forward to continuing to work with the high schools in our area to find ways to expand opportunities for students in both technical as well as academic dual enrollment.”

Dual enrollment provides students with both academic and technical options. Programs include Industrial Maintenance /Modern Manufacturing, Welding, HVAC, Business Administration, Patient Care Technology, College Math and College Biology.  

This fall, WCCS also began three new Modern Manufacturing Programs in west Alabama located in Demopolis High School, Greene County High School and the Hale County Career Technical Center.

“The College appreciates the support of the Alabama Community College System for awarding scholarship grant fund for Technical Dual enrollment and STEM Dual enrollment” said Raji Gourdine, Dean of Technical Program. “We look forward to expanding scholarship opportunities in all of our High schools in West Alabama.”
