Driver’s license office closing April 18 for upgrades

Driver’s License Offices across the state, including Marengo County, will close beginning April 18 and reopen Tuesday, April 26.

Probate Judge Laurie Hall explained the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is installing a new driver’s license portal. She said the connectivity for the current system, which has been used for almost 20 years, is “horrible.” The state has been working on the new system for the last year or so, she continued.

The Probate Office will be open in Linden for all other business except for driver’s licenses. It will continue to serve people who want to get a free photo voter ID.

She asked that the public be patient as the office staff becomes accustomed to the new system and suggests they not coming into the office on the day it reopens. “We will be learning it along with everyone else across the state.”

Once operating, the new system will let applicants enter information before arriving at the office, according to ALEA. The online system also will allow users to update personal information.
