Dr. Joan McConnell

Dr. Joan McConnell age 85 was born in Rayville, Louisiana, but grew up in Pine Hill, Alabama. She and her family lived most of their lives across from the Pine Hill High School (now the Nutrition Center) on Oak Grove Street.

Joan finished high school in Pine Hill, then went to nursing school at South Highland Infirmary in Birmingham. Maynita Stokes Weatherly was a classmate and close friend, and they attended nursing school together.

Joan received her bachelors degree and masters degree in nursing from the University of Alabama. She received her doctorate and teaching degree in nursing from the University of Mississippi. She served as Dean of Nursing at the William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Throughout her 40-year career, she worked and taught nursing in Mississippi, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Alabama.

After her retirement, she enjoyed many local activities in Mobile, Alabama. She served as treasurer of her church, the Spring Hill Methodist Church, for many years.

She is survived by her sister, Erin McConnell Henson of Organge Beach, AL; and two brothers, Charles Emmett McConnell, Jr. of Pine Hill, AL., Chester Allen McConnell of Daphne, AL; several nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Emmett McConnell, Sr. and Linnie “Sweet” Avritt McConnell, two brothers, Charles Eugene McConnell and George Raymond McConnell, and two sisters, Eleanor McConnell Blegebron and Jimmie McConnell McWhorter

Graveside funeral services will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 10:00 am with Rev. Chris Kynard officiating.
