DPD offering free handgun familiarization course

Gun safety is the most important part of gun ownership, not only for you, but those around you. In an effort to help increase gun safety in the local community, the Demopolis Police Department is offering a handgun familiarization course on Nov. 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Instructor Shane Bedsole will teach attendees how to maintain, store, clean and discharge a handgun. Also included will be case law surrounding the premise of carrying a concealed weapon and discharge a weapon in self-defense.  This course is offered to everyone interested in become a responsible handgun owner. There no cost for this class; however, the course is limited to the first 25 registered participants.

This course will teach citizens the following basic skills, knowledge and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely:

  • The fundamentals of pistol shooting
  • The different types of handguns and ammunition
  • How to properly care for and clean your firearm
  • Laws regarding the proper transportation and storage of firearms included CCW permits
  • Alternatives to carrying handguns
  • Situational Awareness
  • How to avoid danger
  • Legal responsibility of owning a handgun

Upon completion of this course participants will have a clear understanding of how to discharge a weapon safely and how the Alabama State law applies to carrying and discharging a weapon.

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable attire.
  • Your own unloaded weapons and ammo
  • Pencil and paper

Those wishing to attend the course must register at this link by Nov. 19. There is a payment option choice on the form, but there will be no charge for the class.
