DMS to hold annual Hoops for Heart

Demopolis Middle School students will host their annual Hoops for Heart event Friday, March 26, beginning at 9 a.m. in the school gym.

Hoops for Heart is a community service learning program of the American Heart Association that teaches students the importance of developing heart-healthy habits.

The goal of the event is to increase students’ knowledge of practices and methods to care for the heart. It is also a way to honor those in Demopolis who have been affected by heart disease and to raise funds to support the AHA since heart disease is the nation’s No. 1 killer.

A benefit of the event is to help students realize that physical activity is both rewarding and fun. Almost a third of children in the United States are overweight or obese, which can make them twice as likely to die before they reach the age of 55.
