The Demopolis Middle School softball team went down swinging in its own tournament Saturday, narrowly missing the championship round after a 4-2 loss to West Blocton.

The Lady Tigers trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth and loaded the bases when Julia Veres reached on an error before Courtney Smith and McKenzie Walker connected on back-to-back singles. DMS put the ball in play on its final out of the game, but proved unable to cash in, suffering its second loss of the day and bowing out of the double-elimination draw.

The Lady Tigers struggled at the plate throughout the contest, going hitless until the bottom of the fifth when Macey Petrey tripled to right field.

The offensive scuffles handed the loss to Natalie Tatum despite a scintillating effort that saw her walk two batters, strike out fiver over six innings and surrender just two hits in the contest.

Demopolis opened its day with an 11-6 win over Northside before suffering a 12-0 setback to eventual tournament champion Hale County.
