DHS varsity boys defeat Hale County with free-throw in last second (with photo gallery)

After trailing in the fourth quarter, the Demopolis Tigers boys basketball team won an 81-80 nail-biter on a Dre Brown free-throw with under one second remaining to defeat the Hale County Wildcats.

The Tigers and Wildcats fought to a 16-16 tie in a very tense first quarter. The Wildcats put up 21 in the second to the Tigers’ 20 to lead 37-36 at the half. Hale County pulled away to a 69-64 lead over the Tigers by the end of the third quarter. However, the Tigers outscored the Wildcats by six in the fourth quarter, with Brown making the front end of two free-throws with .4 seconds remaining to give the Tigers the 81-80 win.

Bryan Bennett led the Tigers with 22 points. Josh Mason and Dalyn Jackson added 15 each. Decorrius Hicks and KoDarrius Vawters added 10 each. Dre Brown added five, including the game winning free-throw. And, Prince Herrell added four.

Bennett and Mason had six rebounds each. Hicks totaled five rebounds and Jackson had four. Vawters grabbed three rebounds, while Brown and Calen Vann had two each. Herrell had one rebound.

Mason had four assists. Hicks added three assists. Vawters had two assists and Bennett, Herrell and Jackson had one each. Mason also recorded three steals.
